EDT’s, DDT’s, LNC’s and Chelsea’s transfer ban
Written by Qzinho // November 2, 2009 // Guides // 22 Comments

Every year the same old questions are asked about how to get the German National Team to pick real players and to a lesser extent about Japanese teams have proper names and to an even lesser extent about those obscure Asian Nations that have been disabled as well. In this guide I’ll go through all the configuration files to let you know what they do and how to reverse them!
All the file names I mention from here on in are located in the edt and lnc folders within “C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\football manager 210\data\db\1000″ if you installed via steam or “C:\Program Files\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 2010\data\db\1000″ if you installed the boxed version
Fake.lnc
This file has a number of intentions, firstly it disables the German National team but also changes Oliver Khan’s name to Jens Mustermann and finally disables player pictures for France and Holland.
To reverse the effects of this file you can either go in and change the 1′s to 0′s which will disable it, remove the entries and save the file or just delete the whole file.
nleague.lnc
This is by far one of the largest configuration files which creates fake names for clubs in Japan, changes a number of colours and disables the Chinese, South Korean and Japanese National Teams. The other thing file does is randomise the players of Albirex Niigata (Singapore).
Once again either changing the 1′s to o’s will disable some functions or you can just delete the file.
team_holland.ddt
This file does exactly what it says on the tin – 24 of the finest Dutch players are made “first choice” for their country. To end up with a more random Dutch national squad just delete the file.
transfer_embargo.edt
The one you’ve all been looking for! There are two entries in this file – Chelsea & Bournemouth. You can either remove the lines or delete the file and Chelsea will then be able to buy players again! Maybe you might even want to stop other clubs buying players for a period of time ….
valid_takeovers_only.edt
This file determines which types of takeover are permitted in each country – well worth having a look at just to see where the Russian Billionaires won’t be able to invest!!
add_my_chairman.edt
This is one of those fun features that doesn’t get exploited as much as I thought it would, the opportunity to enter your name, favourite club etc. and maybe become their future chairman!
add_my_journalists.edt
This was a new addition in Football Manager 2009 whereby you could add a list of real journalists to the game to make press conferences more realistic.
add_my_media_sources.edt
Coupled with the Journalists file you can add real media sources to the game making press conferences more realistic.
alliteration_adjectives.edt
This is the file which picks the superlatives for those news stories along the lines of ‘Larsen-sational’ there is also a list of negative words but these are only for newgens (due to legal issues). I challenge you to find words that could be added to the already very long list!
sugar_daddy.edt
The second file in this list created initially for Chelsea, in the latest version they are also joined by Manchester City and Notts County.
In the latest incarnation of this file there is now three different types of Sugar Daddy
- Front end – They throw money at the club to spend.
- Back end – They spend enough to make them a force in their current league but if they go up a level or two it would no longer apply.
- Underwriter – They don’t give the manager any extra transfer budget but come the end of the season they will always cover any loss the club is making and not expect the money back.
Hopefully this brief explanation of each file will get your creative juices flowing and some customised versions will be shared, if not at least you’ll be able to buy players for Chelsea and see Ballack playing for Germany!

Fantastic little article Q a few things that I didn’t know was about being able to add myself as a chairman etc… I think I might have a go at that as well as to remember to make sure that the German & Dutch national sides are in my game next time I do this.
If someone was to do this, would it change it there save game or would a new game have to be started?
I think I might also add Pompey to the transfer embargo as well as changing it so that Chelsea have an embargo on them from the start of the game.
Something I found interesting from Miles and the Podcast as the fact of changing so that no teams can buy anything in the first window, as the game is released after the transfer window all the transfers have been made for this window so FM players should be able to start with the teams as they are.
Just like any custom file it has to be present when you start a new game, they won’t take effect on a saved game unfortunately
Good stuff. It’ll certainly help all those new to the game.
Maybe follow it up with an explanation of how to get the real competition names in the game (ie Champions League rather than Euro Cup etc).
I’m also surprised you didn’t mention the file that can create future players/regens with your name and details (in a similar vein to the Chairman file).
The real competition names and future regens etc. may be supported functions in the game but in this guide I was covering the one’s that included when you install the game. But you are indeed right I think there’s much more to be covered!
Ah, right. Should have realised that really
Actually I’ve tried what JP mentioned about adding future regens, but it didn’t work. Added myself to an edt or ddt file, can’t remember which, with all the instructions I’ve found. Played for 15 years and didn’t get the little Zoli
Good stuff btw, Muartz!
What program do you use to edit the files as I am having trouble editing them?
You will be able to edit them with notepad and make sure you save the files as .edt when you have finished.
Ah thank you. I was not saving it as .edt which was why I was having problems. Thanks for your help
Thanks for the great article!
Maybe I am being stupid or something, but when I click on the db folder, it says it is empty. All I want to do initially is get rid of the Fake.lnc and nleague.lnc files. What is te quickest way of accessing these files, I cannot find them anywhere. Even when I search for them, I get no results. I am rather confused…
excellent stuff mate cheers! for downloads the best plase is
http://www.fm-base.co.uk
when i’ve tried making any alterations to any of the files i’m unable to save any changes, i get a message saying to make sure the pathway is correct etc. any tips?????
Have you tried copying the files somewhere else like your desktop before editing them?
no i hadn’t tried that but have have now, seems ok ad has let me delete the previous and copy the new one back. thank you so much
No worries, glad we got you sorted!
hmm, after i’d transfered the files over it made no defference to the game, i’d tried adding cardiff a “sugar daddy” and followed the format of notts county and man city but when starting a new game cardiff still had no money to spend…. any suggestions?
As the club name did you put Cardiff City or Cardiff? The files seem to use the clubs long name
I think that when you create a game it takes the original finances from the database, so you might have to tweak that also initially
how do i tweak the clubs finances? yeah i put in cardiff city and set finances to “0″ (fake)
Hi I have deleted the holland file but only one keeper is selected for holland every time plz help!
So I deleter fake.lnc, in both folders (original and 11.1 patch) and sure enough, German national team with real players when I started. I play through the preseason and eventually the first international friendlies occur, but by this point, the German team is full of fake players again. Thinking I might be crazy, I load up my oldest rolling save and see the team with real players again. Go on holiday for a couple of weeks and fake players again. Any idea what’s going on here?
