World Cup Challenge – Spain!
The Tour leaves the greatest competition in World football – the World Cup! But before we head to the home of the winners it’s first time to try and replicate their success! So, it’s time to get out your passport and book the flights back to South Africa as you embark on a journey to take over the pre-tournament and eventual winners – Spain. The task is to try and emulate the success of the reigning champions and make history as they made their first ever World Cup semi final, final and capped it by lifting the trophy for the first time.
During the 18 tournaments that have been held, seven nations have won the title. Brazil have won the World Cup a record five times, and they are the only team to have played in every tournament. Italy, the current champions, have won four titles, and Germany are next with three titles. The other former champions are Uruguay, winners of the inaugural tournament, and Argentina, with two titles each, and England and France, with one title each. Brazil and Germany have both made the most appearances in the final, with seven, while Germany have made the most appearances in the top four, with eleven. An interesting fact is that only Brazil and Argentina have ever won the trophy on a foreign continent, so that could prove an useful advantage to the home nation.
The World Cup is the most widely-viewed sporting event in the world, where an estimated 715.1 million people watched the final match of the 2006 World Cup held in Germany. The next World Cup will be held in South Africa, between 11 June and 11 July 2010, and the 2014 World Cup will be held in Brazil.
The Spanish side is commonly referred to as La Furia Roja (The Red Fury) or La Furia Española (The Spanish Fury) or La Roja (The Red). Spain are currently the reigning World and European champions, having won the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the 2008 UEFA European Football Championship. Their recent success has finally helped them rid themselves of the ‘best team to never have won the World Cup’ and ‘nearly men’ tags that had followed them around for the past decade.
Spain also won the 1964 European Nations’ Cup and reached the UEFA Euro 1984 Final. In July 2008 Spain rose to the top of the FIFA World Rankings for the first time in the team’s history, becoming the sixth nation to top this ranking, and the first nation to top the ranking without previously having won the World Cup. Between November 2006 and June 2009 Spain went undefeated for a record tying 35 consecutive matches before their loss to the United States, a record shared with Brazil, including a record 15-game winning streak and thus earning third place in the FIFA Confederations Cup.
Key History
World Cup: 1 (2010)
UEFA European Championship: 2 (1964, 2008)
The pride of the tournament is the aptly named stadium which will host the final. ‘Soccer City’ is a 91,141 seater stadium built in 1989 and refurbished at a cost of approximately £220m last year. This stadium will be the home of the final and is the centre-piece of the entire tournament. The Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg underwent a major upgrade for the 2010 tournament, with a new design inspired by traditional African pottery. The upgrade included: an extended upper tier around the stadium to increase the capacity, an additional 99 executive suites, an encircling roof, new changing room facilities and new floodlights. The construction was completed on Wednesday, 21 October 2009, and was marked by a huge celebration at the stadium.
The outside of the stadium is designed to have the appearance of an African pot, the cladding on the outside is a mosaic of fire and earthen colours with a ring of lights running around the bottom of the structure, simulating fire underneath the pot. No spectator will be more than 100 metres (330 ft) from the action and there are no restricted views in the stadium.
The stands in Soccer City are articulated by ten black vertical lines; nine are aligned geographically with the nine other stadia involved in the 2010 World Cup, and a tenth line is aimed at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium, which hosted the previous World Cup final in 2006. This represents the road to the final and it is hoped that after the World Cup, each goal scored at the stadium will be placed in pre-cast concrete panels on a podium so that the full history of the tournament’s scores can be seen for years to come.
